How to plan out content site structure

A (very) simple sheet for planning out content site structure:

* group pages into topic clusters
* import keyword data from ahrefs for metrics
* assign priority score (1 – 3) to decide what to do first
* add notes, word counts, title tag drafts

This is for planning out topic clusters, hub & spoke, pillar pages, whatever you want to call them.

Basically a group of topically related pages.

Let’s say I want to build a group of pages around the topic of *types of pizza*.

Content strategy 101:

Do keyword research to find a good target KW for the main page + then find related terms to target with supporting pages.

Now run those KWs through Ahrefs keyword explorer, export and add the file to the *kw-data* tab.

As if by magic, keyword data pulls into the site plan.

Time to look at the SERPs for each of those keywords and figure out how many words you need to write in order to answer the query.

Use thruuu to analyze the SERPs:

Give a priority score of 1, 2, 3 for each page:

🟢 1 – create first
🟠 2 – create next
🔴 3 – save for later

Simple is better than a complicated weighted score here.

Use your own preference for prioritisation.

Personally, I’ll try to create pages with lower word counts + lower comp first to see results faster.

Doesn’t matter how you do it as long as you do it.

Here’s how I prioritised my imaginary pizza content.

(hawaiian pizza gets a 3 because it’s an abomination, there I said it)

You can fill in your desired URL + page title too.

Drop in any notes you think will be helpful later down the line (custom image ideas, internal links, contacts for promotion etc)

Now you should have an actionable content plan. This is designed to be simple and to get content production moving.

Learn from my mistakes: do a full scale content strategy AFTER you’ve got some real results.

FAQs

How do you prioritise keywords?

Generally by how competitive the SERPs are. Some keywords I want ranking ASAP so I might prioritise them, other times I might go after terms that will rank fast. So a long winded way of saying… *it depends*
